Reasons for Water Pressure Problems

We all depend on adequate and consistent water pressure from our faucets and fixtures to smoothly accomplish everyday household activities like showering, doing laundry, washing dishes, and flushing the toilet. Experiencing water pressure issues can make completing even the simplest of tasks incredibly annoying. Low water pressure problems in a single tap can be looked into and fixed by the homeowner, but when multiple fixtures start to dribble, it is time to call a local plumbing company for assistance. It is essential to find the root cause of the problem and fix it immediately to avoid further damage to the plumbing system.

Here are some of the usual suspects that might be causing the water pressure woes in the home:

Faulty fixtures

Faulty fixtures are one of the most common causes of low water pressure. The faucets and fixtures become clogged due to limescale, dirt, or dust, which can impede the water flow. If you are experiencing issues with a particular faucet, remove and clean the aerator with a brush. Call a plumber for inconsistent water pressure in fixtures throughout the house. If a showerhead or any of the faucets is old, consider replacing it.

Closed valves

Check the main shut off valve and water meter valve to see if they are completely open or not. If either of the valves is partially or fully closed, it can lower the flow and water pressure. It should be the first thing you inspect if there have been recent plumbing repairs in the home or the area’s water lines.

Clogged pipes

The home plumbing system is vulnerable to clogs over time due to mineral build-up, dirt, dust, and grease. These blockages obstruct the water flow and decrease its pressure. While some issues can be resolved by removing the clogs from the pipe, more severe damage may require pipe replacement.

Leaky pipes

Leaks, both minor and severe, are among the most common reasons for the drop in the water pressure. Old and damaged pipes are less likely to maintain consistent water pressure. Even a single leak in the plumbing system can compromise the water pressure, leading to waste and causing mold issues. Look out for signs of a leak like bubbles, discoloration, and wet spots both inside and outside the house. Hire a plumber right away to fix leaks.

Faulty or broken pressure regulator

Some homes have regulators for controlling the water pressure. A malfunctioning or failing pressure regulator can result in too high or too low water pressure.

Corroded pipes

If the home has cast iron or galvanized steel piping system, it can suffer from corrosion or scale build-up over time, restricting the water flow. It is a slow-occurring problem, you will not notice it until the issue has become severe. Corrosion in the pipes is a serious issue and requires expensive repairs. For a more long-term solution, consider replacing the old pipes with the ones made from more corrosion-resistant materials like copper or plastic.

Some other reasons for water pressure problems can be issues with the main supply line, shared pipelines, and using multiple plumbing fixtures at once.
