Dangerous Plumbing Myths: Debunked - Part 2

Last month we covered some common misconceptions and plumbing myths in residential drain etiquette, i.e., what can and cannot go down the kitchen and bathroom sink drains. This month let's continue debunking potentially harmful plumbing myths that accompany the plumbing system. While this is just scratching the surface, here are some of the most common misconceptions that are dangerous for plumbing:

A noisy water heater is not a big deal

We've all had a noisy dishwasher or dryer, which is not good. One thing to never ignore is banging, screeching, or gurgling sounds coming from the home plumbing. When a water heater is making annoying sounds, it signals something wrong. Noisy water heaters are often a sign of built-up sediment and the system failing. Loud water heaters need to be inspected and repaired immediately.

Slow faucet leaks are not a more extensive problem

Living in a home with older plumbing means you may have grown accustomed to the kitchen sink leaking a little water every time. It may not seem important, but it is common in conjunction with other root problems. A tiny leak at the tap can also be a more significant leak elsewhere. Contact a licensed professional plumber to inspect your leaky faucets.

Toilet cleaning tablets do not harm tanks

One of the most popular items to clean in a home is the toilet. When cleaning supply companies came out with toilet cleaning tablets, they could hardly keep them on the shelves. Now that the frenzy has calmed down, experts have had years to examine the wear and tear these otherwise applicable cleaning tablets cause. Toilet tablets use bleach and other chemicals to keep the toilet clean. Those harsh chemicals damage essential parts of the toilet, such as the flush valve and flapper. Getting the inside of the bowel clean without harmful chemicals is still possible: avoid these tablets to prolong the commode's lifespan.

The plumbing is OK if showers and sinks drain

A typical inclination is that all the plumbing operates perfectly if the sinks and the showers are draining. However, since most problems start small and grow significantly, it's crucial to maintain plumbing care, such as flushing the water heater and inspecting the sewer line. Thinking everything is hunky-dory and neglecting regular maintenance can land a homeowner with unexpected, expensive plumbing repairs.

Keep the plumbing in excellent condition

There are a lot of old wives' tales out there about home maintenance. While many are harmless and can be fun things to try out, others can lead to costly damage to a home's foundation. The easiest way to keep residential plumbing in tip-top shape is to schedule an annual or bi-annual plumbing inspection and routine service for the home.
